New Year's Picture

This picture was taken at Hermosa Beach on the way back to Redondo Beach. I went bicycling with Stella, and we barely made it to Venice Beach. I would say we biked a good 25 miles that day. Last time when I biked to school, these swings caught my eye, and I told myself I would take a picture next time around. That's the Palos Verdes Peninsula in the background.

it's not what it looks like...

I SWEAR, he was just climbing my face. It was cute at the time, now it just plain obscene.

Dan Quayle quotes

"I was recently on a tour of Latin America, and the only regret I have was that I didn't study Latin harder in school so I could converse with those people." -- J. Danforth Quayle

"Mars is essentially in the same orbit... Mars is somewhat the same distance from the Sun, which is very important. We have seen pictures where there are canals, we believe, and water. If there is water, that means there is oxygen. If oxygen, that means we can breathe." -- Vice President Dan Quayle, 8/11/89

"The Holocaust was an obscene period in our nation's history. I mean in this century's history. But we all lived in this century. I didn't live in this century." -- Vice President Dan Quayle, 9/15/88

"I believe we are on an irreversible trend toward more freedom and democracy - but that could change." -- Vice President Dan Quayle, 5/22/89

"One (1) word sums up probably the responsibility of any vice president, and that one word is 'to be prepared'." -- Vice President Dan Quayle, 12/6/89

"You all look like happy campers to me. Happy campers you are, happy campers you have been, and as far as I'm concerned, happy campers you will always be." -- Vice President Dan Quayle, addressing a group of Samoans during a Pacific trip

"I love California, I practically grew up in Phoenix." -- Vice President Dan Quayle

"It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it." -- Vice President Dan Quayle

"[It's] time for the human race to enter the solar system." -- Vice President Dan Quayle

not much to do at 3am

Went to sleep at 8:30pm and woke up an hour ago. I guess I'll head for the YMCA at around 5:30am since I haven't been there for something like 2 months. I gave up after 11 situps yesterday. My whole body was trembling like a trembling puppy. You like that analogy? (It's 3am, I don't want to think)
What to do for the next hour and a half? I have about $130 worth of rebate forms to fill out and send. (Not going to happen)
Hmmm. I could sit around and try to come up with domain names that I will end up never buying. I've been doing that for the past few days, and so far the top candidates are:
www.********.com
www.**********.com (edumacated was taken, dammit!)
www.************.com (nerdy, but has the most resale value)
www.***********.com
* edited out so nobody steals them (read 3 posts up)

It would be great if I could set up an online poll to get votes from you guys. On second thought, forget it. It would probably look something like this:
www.********.com (2 votes)
www.**********.com (1 vote)
www.************.com (0 votes)
www.***********.com (1 vote)
Maybe even less.

Other candidates for my domain are domains with random numbers like:
www.833am.com
www.914pm.com
www.12more.com
www.22oldmen.com
You get the idea.
Okay, no more internet this morning. I need to be productive.

uh-oh

I just remembered that I was supposed to show up at the court in Inglewood for jury duty selection on the 10th. It was mandatory because I forgot to call in on 12/15.
The Code of Civil Procedure, Section 209, provides "any prospective trial juror who has been summoned for service, and who fails to attend, may be attached and compelled to attend; and, following an order to show cause hearing, the court may find the prospective juror in contempt of court, punishable by fine, incarceration or both, as otherwise provided by law."

OOPS.

These two posts were taken from a thread about the Minolta Xt Digital Camera on sale for $199 at Gateway. Apparently, Gateway Customer Service sucks:

First, couldn't place the order as the buy button did not work. I am using IE6 and had to use another PC to place the order.
Second, my order showed up pending approval. It also said they were waiting for parts. Estimated shipping date was the 22nd!!!!!!
Third, the order is now pending financial approval and estimated shipping date of the 23rd!!!!!!!
Fourth, I filled out an online form to ask what the delay was. Big mistake. The form doesn't work.
So, I called Gateway CSR and was told the following....
The website HAD issues. The webmaster fixed it. I told her it still doesn't work properly. She told me "he's new". So, the internet is "new" too?
My order is taking a long time to ship. She told me the product is out of stock. I told her the website says "in stock". She told me the (new) webmaster would fix that. I asked why it was in stock when I ordered but now backordered. She said Gateway have a high quality control standard and the boxes may have been damaged and returned. I think I then heard the page turn on her CSR script. She also told me they are working with a new distribution warehouse. Am I unlucky or what?
All very funny, but wait. This may alarm you. I then asked why my order was pending financial approval. I am good for the $200 I told her. She then told me the manager had to approve the sale as it is on the web for a lower price than invoice. The "manager" by the way has been "sick", so is backed up with work but he'll get round to it! She then seemed very eager to lose my business by offering to cancel the order. I told her I'd wait it out. She said she'd keep a personal eye on my order. Titter ye not.
So, a broken website, a sick manager, a new warehouse, great quality control and an out of stock item don't make me too sure I will get this anytime soon.
Anybody else having similar problems? Oh and you may want to buy RIGHT NOW as she also said they are trying to change the price online but the computer won't let them. The rise of the machines.

When your Gateway CSR says over her shoulder to someone, "It ain't no biggie, baby", you know this ain't Dell Lite you're talking to.

CSR said matter of factly I should have my camera by Jan 23. But in the next sentence, she says the camera is OOS, and that she doesn't know when I'll get it. She says these two things as if they're consistent with one another. When I point out that both can't be right, she acts like we just made a major discovery together.

Where this deal is going, who knows. Certainly not Gateway.

how do YOU do it?

Ever wonder about something that you do a certain way that is done in private and you've never questioned before? It happened to me today in the bathroom of Barnes and Noble. You know those flushable paper toilet seat covers? Well, how I've always used them is, I pull one out, stress a little while I try to rip those three connected parts (stressful because I only go when I HAVE to go), and place it on the toilet seat. It can get a little tricky because sometimes the sagging center part gets drenched pretty quick, causing the whole seat cover to drop into the toilet bowl. You have to place it, drop your pants, and sit on it, all in one motion. It's an acquired skill I guess. Unless you start from the beginning with your pants already dropped, but I've never...

ANYWAY.

I was unloading some cargo and since I had been studying Java for a few hours, my mind was in pure logical sequence mode. All of a sudden, it hit me. How much easier it would be if I just placed the damn seat cover on the toilet seat and opened the middle part WHILE I was sitting on it?? Holy shit! (Pun intended). I wonder if I'm the only one who's been doing it the "standing" way.
Java is useful afterall.

bye happy

my four year old dog happy died yesterday sometime between two and six in the morning. we went to sleep together. she jumped onto the bed and i let her sleep in between my legs under the covers. i woke up around 11 and left the room and my mom found her dead around 12. she was on the floor next to the bed. i keep wondering if i somehow rolled over her during the night, but she had been acting really weird this week, so i guess something was wrong with her. i feel so depressed. i knew she was acting weird, but i didn't think to bring her to the vet.

i usually don't spend that much time with my dogs because i'm busy with school, but on thursday i spent the whole day with them. i had a lot of reading to do, so i decided to read on the floor with my dogs. i called happy but she wouldn't come, so i went to look for her. she was sleeping in the bathroom where i had left her earlier because i had to wash her butt because it was dirty. i picked her up and carried her to the living room where she snuggled up beside me as i read. after that, we went for a long walk, which i don't normally do, and i let her sniff everything that she wanted to because i was in no hurry that night. friday, i didn't really see her around because i came home late. she must have been lying around somewhere in the house during the three hours before i went to sleep. but she came to my bed as she always does when i crawl into bed. she's a small dog so it takes her a few tries to make it onto the bed. sometimes i have to give her a boost. sometimes i think that she isn't really trying her best and that she is waiting for the boost.

i feel really bad because she was always somewhat scared of me, and i never understood why. i can scold my other dog kumi and she would be fine after five minutes, but happy would be scared of me for at least the rest of that day. she would look away if i looked directly at her, taking peeks at me from the side. sometimes when i do pushups in my room, she just sits there and watches me with her legs sticking out in front of her. she was distracting me, so i put her on my chair while i did pushups. it was so cute, i had to take a picture.

we're thinking of replacing her with another dog, but i dont want another dog. i want happy. so i can spend more time with her. so she won't have to lie in the dark by the front door, sleeping because she has nothing else to do.
